Shopping Day

Sunday is shopping day, so three of us took off this morning around 10:00 for Sharjah, a city just north of Dubai on the Persian Gulf.  It is located in the emirate of Sharjah.  We went to the largest market in the emirate, the Central Market.  It's popular/common name is the Blue Souq.

It's two long buildings with a bridge connecting the two.  One reason the locals like to go to this souq is, it is air conditioned!  When it is 105 degrees like it has been the past few days, that is a real plus!
There are lots of shops - carpets, linens, scarves, souvenirs, antiques, and jewelry...  The shop keepers stand at the door and try to talk you into coming in to his shop.  You bargain for your price...don't pay what they say the first time.  It was kind of fun.

My friends thought I really should buy one of these outfits for Aimee and Sarah!

While Becky and Meg went to one last shop, I went outside and walked around for a few minutes.

Across the street there was a prayer room for men. Later in a restaurant I saw a prayer room for women - located in the women's bathroom!

There was a park along the lake as well...very pretty.  It's pretty hazy these hot days...I am told there is no wind off the Gulf to blow it off.  Will probably be like that the rest of the time we are here.

Nice boats farther over beyond the bridge, too.

Then we were off to LuLu HyperMarket for Indian Sarees, lunch, and groceries.  How's that for a wide range of services in one very big store?  The nice little place where we ate was The Thali Place.  I learned thali (meaning plate) is an Indian meal made up of a selection of various dishes.  Like this one Meg enjoyed!

On the way home we saw lots of these beautiful trees - Royal Poinciana.  The common name is Flame Tree.  They are in full bloom right now and are quite striking.

Just next to LuLu HyperMarket was an arena, so I asked what sports were played in Dubai.  I learned that emierates, in general, do not play sports.  Falconry is the traditional sport in the UAE and football (soccer) is extremely popular, as well as golf and tennis.  You see a lot of cricket and rugby, camel and horse racing, too.

Today is a national holiday, but no one seems to know exactly what we are celebrating!
