On the road to Bryce National Park...

It's now Friiday and we left this morning to take the scenic route 9 east out of Zion Natioal Park, heading to Bryce National Park.  It's an historic old road made in the 1930s under Roosevelt's CCC program to provide work for millions of people.

I loved it...narrow and winding with a 1 1/2 mile tunnel...a very difficult undertaking back in the day!

We stopped just past the tunnel to hike up to a wonderful overlook, giving a backdoor look at Zion.

The trail itself was interesting and fun...

And I almost stepped on this lovely tarantula on a narrow ledge...really startled me there for a minute.
He was in a puddle of muddy water.  Kind of interesting...

Beautiful and varied rock formations in every direction.

At the top by the overlook!

The view from the top looking back at Zion.

The hike was well worth the time and effort!  Would highly recommend it!

This pic looks down from the trail at the tunnel opening.

A beautiful arch we passed along the way...

Interesting checkered pattern in these two mountains...I think it was the work of Indians.

A beautiful Mesa...

Part of the Red Canyon on the very scenic route 12 taking us to Bryce.

We saw so many massive rock formations, mesas, and valleys...made me wonder what the pioneers felt as they came upon therm as they crossed the country...  Some of them so large it would take days or even weeks to get around them.

This area had memorial "Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail" signs along the road.

We stopped at a rest stop along the way to way to eat our lunch.  Andy lured this bird with potato chips to get a picture of him.  He ate quite a few chips before we got the pic...hope he didn't get a tummy ache!
