Anders Baptism

Sunday night our Grandson, Anders, was baptized at Grace Church in Colorado.  He has been thinking about it for some time.

He decided - the Spirit worked in his heart - now, right now was THE time.  We were able to 'be there' with live streaming from the Grace Church website.  It was great to hear what he had handwritten...

Ander's Dad and a great family friend who is on staff at the church got to do the honors.  How great is that!

We are so grateful that three of our five grandchildren have taken this step in their spiritual journey.  Will be so interesting to see where God leads them in the years ahead.

Sunday feels funny

Sunday always feels a bit funny to me.  The weekend is Friday - Saturday so Sunday seems like Monday.  We took it easy today.  We visited the large marshy bird sanctuary.

We saw a. couple of varieties of flamingos...and an eagle flew by.  They migrate down from Iran at this time of the year.  Many types of birds will be coming this way in the weeks ahead so Andy and would like to go back later in December.

There was a serious birder there with her binoculars.  She was seeing many varieties of small birds and enjoying the experience.

We had a leisurely picnic lunch and talked for quite a while around the table.  Andy and I had questions for Gary, who works in the political world.  Was fun.

Before we knew it, it was three o'clock and time for the Marx family to get picked up to go on their Dune Bashing adventure in the desert.  Some got queasy tummies but they enjoyed the ride.  They rode camels and had a spicy dinner with a show, too.  Check it out online - it's a fun evening you don't always see in the US.

Global Village

Later that evening a few of us went to the Global Village - a wonderland with buildings representing 35-40 countries around the world, an amusement park,  an incredible assortment of restaurants and kiosks with snacks and meals, entertainment....somethng for everyone.  Inside the buildings venders and craftsman come from around the world to sell their wares and perform.

The US pavilion is new this year.  Compared with many others it's, in my opinion, kind of hokie with a western theme.  We didn't even go in...

Thailand was beautiful done...

The Ferris wheel can be seen throughout the park and had a  light show of its own.

Faith and I went on this ride - about 18 stories high, we could see the lights far and wide'. Great fun!

Faith and Gary tested the Krispy Kreme to see if they were as good as at home...they did not disappoint.  We don't have them in Milwaukee but you can fine them all over Dubai!

China and India were spectacular...

They are located right on the water where you can take a boat  ride around the park....And take a selfie on the bridge!

We were at the Village  till about 9:30 and people were still streaming in.

15 dirham, less than four dollars gets you in - seniors get in free so it' doesn't have to be real expensive.

Enjoying the Creek

The Creek is the area down by the Persian Gulf where Dubai has its roots. The traditional old area is on the east side of the Creek.  We visited the gold souq where you could spend a boatload of money...

The huge, heavy necklaces were used as a gift from the husband to his new bride - which is what she inherits if he dies.  The children get the rest of the inheritance.

There are dozens of stores lining the street with gold.

A few blocks over you can find the spice souqs....everything from indigo spice to cinnamon tofranckincense.

Aimee had fun shopping with a very helpful happy shop owner.

On the water taxi we saw the restaurant where we had lunch as we crossed the Creek to the more modern side.

On the water taxi - costs 1 dirham (27 cents).

While the girls were shopping, the shop owner had fun with Ryan.

The next stop was the wonderful Dubai Museum.  It's housed in the oldest building left in Dubai - the Al Fahidi Fort dating back to the late 1700's.

You could spend all morning at the museum - well worth the time.

A water taxi similar to the ones we rode to and from...
A fun day exploring and shopping, learning and eating!

Ibn Battuta

So grateful to have Gary, Aimee, Faith, Avery and Ryan here with us in Dubai for a week.  We picked them up at the airport  at about 1:30 in the middle of the night.  They were tired but in good spirits and glad to be here.  They slept until nearly two this afternoon.

Andy and I went to our very favorite church this morning - Redeemer Church of Dubai.  We love the people, the worship, the prayers, and the connection we feel there.  Was wonderful!  Thanks Dave Furnan for a great message and Glen Jones for great music..

After a simple lunch we all. headed off on our first adventure...to the Ibn Battuta Mall.  I'm not sure why we never studied about this man in World History!  Look him up on Google - he did amazing things all over the Middle East, China, Europe, India, and Egypt.

The Marx family loves Tim Hortons and was delighted to have dessert before supper - Timbits!  Lots of big smiles!

Ryan wasn't happy (being silly) about having his picture taken in front of the life sized elephant in the India Court.

The whole family in the China Court.

We ate supper in the Food Court.  We chose the right time - it got really busy as we were eating.  Faith and I shared a Shawarma...a first for her...and she really liked it!

Andy and Nancy in the Egypt Court.

We took the Metro - it's a long ride down and back, but easier than driving.  Came back to the house and pretty much went right to bed.  Nice day exploring and sharing more about living in the UAE.  The kids did well. Hope everyone sleeps okay.  We're off to the Creek tomorrow!

Low Key Day

Definitely needed a low key day today....didn't even take a walk!  The weather is SO nice compared to the other times we have been here.  That first time it was 100 to 120 the entire time.  We pretty much hung out, went to the City Center Mall to get money exchanged into Dirham and bought some groceries for the next week or so.  Met some new people, and a friend made a wonderful chicken pie dinner.  We ate outside on the patio.  Really Really nice to be able to sit outside and chat and not have moisture on my upper lip!

We leave here in a few minutes to go pick up Aimee, Gary, Faith, Avery, and Ryan at the airport.  They flew through Amsterdam and were delayed for an hour.  They must have made up half of that time because they will arrive only 1/2 hour late.  I'm guessing they will be weary but still excited.

Planning to sleep until 8 again tomorrow, have some breakfast and head off to one of our favorite activities in Dubai...Redeemer Church of Dubai.  Can't wait!  For those of you who have not read my blog in the past, the weekend here is Friday-Saturday with worship starting the weekend off on Friday morning.  Hopefully I will have more energy tomorrow and take a few pictures to post!

Milwaukee to Dubai

We made it safely from Milwaukee to Dubai...26 hours and 9 time zone.  I realize that it was not the the most efficient  schedule (because we had to change our flights just a couple of weeks ago), but we are glad to be here once again!

Ned picked us up at 9:30 and we got checked in easily.  Gotta love TSA Pre Approval ...don't know if it's our age or our military ID, but we get it every time.  The flight to Newark was on time and pretty smooth.  I haven't been through Newark in years...as soon as we landed my thought was, this place looks look and tired.  Kinda like me!

We had to fight our way to get down the stairs - which were narrow with people going up AND down.  Then there was a mass of people waiting for the A bus to get to the concourse.  Once we got there we faced another set of stairs - old, worn and normal sized...but there were hoards of people trying to go up AND down again.

Once we got inside, it was modern, bright, and  upscale.  None of the normal run of the mill fast food outlets in the food court.  No, no, no - seemed like local restaurants and good food.  We had very tasty quesadillas.  After lunch (which was at 3:00) I walked the concourse - 2 1/2 miles, round and round.  The restaurants and stores were very upscale, even the Hudson's store was much more trendy than most airports. All of the restaurants had iPads set up to order, read the news, play games...  Even at the food court we paid at a central location, self serve.

Unfortunately once we got on the plane headed for Zurich, we didn't take off for about 50 minutes.  Made the 6 1/2 hour flight very long.  They announced that even tho were were that late, we would land on time.  How can they say that?  Fortunately it was a small plane and we had the A and B seats on the left side.  It was foggy and dusk when we left - couldn't see a bit of New York City.

In fact we couldn't see much of anything until we were over the UK in the morning.  They served dinner at 9:30.  Sorry, airplane food didn't look all that good at that time of the night.  They did, however, serve Villa Dolce Vanilla Bean Gelato and it was terrific.  Andy gave me grief  for getting dessert without eating all my dinner.

I don't know about you, but I find it hard to sleep on planes.  I read and watched two movies.  Me Before You and Finding Dory.  Both were pretty good.

We arrived in Zurich pretty much on time, as promised.  Much of the time we had a 115 to 125 tailwind....I guess that's what they were counting on.

The Zurich airport was sleek and modern and clean.  Lots of pretty wood furniture and trim.  It's not real big - 2 lunch spots and a Starbucks.  Several nice gift shops with Swiss souvenirs.  Not much else.  But,  a pleasant setting for another somewhat long layover.  I got in another 2 1-2 mile walk in.  There was snow on the mountains off in the distance north of the airport.

The first two flights were on United...this one was Swiss Air..  The Swiss usually do things quite well, so I was looking forward to it.  Not so much.  For the first few hours a young child behind me was crying and/or kicking my seat.  I never did look back to see the child or his/her parents.  It was very chilly as I was sitting in a draft.  Had to put my coat on.  You had no control over the air flow.  We didn't get the 2 seats on the side on this flight...two of four seats in the middle.  They were nice and wide and there was even a double arm rest between seats two and three.  No problem there.   But the couple in front of us insisted on putting their seats all the way back for most of the time. There was adequate space with the seats their upright and locked position, but there was very little space with those two seats back.

Here I really must add that with my low blood pressure and dizziness the last 6 months the
doctors want me to drink 2-3 liters of water every day and eat more salt.  No problems there...potato
chips are one of my favorite food groups.  However, I need to visit the ladies room much more these
days...and I need to go right away, if you get my drift. I'm short, right?  I also must add that in the last year I have lost some weight...which is a good thing, not a bad thing.  I don't take up much space, but I could barely stand up or move once I stood up.  It was inevitable - I bumped into their chairs and had to physically move their seats in order to get out.  Not a pretty picture. I'm tired, a bit irritated,
and I need to go.  Get the picture?

So, to help me doze and to pass the time on a 6 hours flight,  I did read and watched two more movies.  The BFG and The Meddler.  Both were pretty good.  And, lucky me, I got to see them up close and personal.  With those seats back the screen was only about 8-9 inches from my face.  I think I saw double a couple of times.

We arrived pretty much on time.  We walked quite a ways and took a train in the Dubai airport to get to passport control.  There were hundreds of people in Disney style lines waiting to get their passport stamped and get tourist visas.  From leaving the plane to meeting Derik it took an hour.

But, through it all, we're here!  We went to bed at about 12:30 local time and set the alarm for 8:00 to have breakfast.  The adventure begins!
